Have you ever felt lost? Hopeless? Like you wanted to give up? Did you? Or did you summon every bit of strength, courage, and determination in your body? Face life's challenges head on with no fear? That is what Aurum, the one who never gave in, did.

PART ONE

The small golden pup stirred slightly, and opened her eyes. They were a brilliant yellow-green, with flecks of deeper green, like healthy grass. She lifted her head and perked her pointed ears, her orbs scanning the dark walls of the den, checking to see if anyone else was awake yet. When the pup saw no other movement in the quiet den, a smile of satisfaction crept across her face as she noiselessly padded towards the entrance of the underground den. Aurum catiously peeked out of the den, wondering if anyone was awake outside. Once again spotting no one, the yellow-hued lass skipped happily outside and gazed around. The camp wwas surrounded by trees on three sides, the forest very dense to Aurum's right, thinning out behind her, to where there were just a few trees scattered about on her left. About 40 feet in front of the pup was a little stream, the pack's source of water. The dens were set around the edges of the camp, sheltered by the trees. In one corner was the carcass of an elk, almost completely eaten. Most of the ground was hard-packed dirt, pressed down by the paws of the pack members. The only spots where grass grew in the camp was around the edges and near the dens. Aurum giggled and began trying to decide where she would go. Her green optics darted from place to place. "Into the forest, where there are more places to hide if someone comes! she thought, and scampered off to begin her adventure.

PART TWO

Aurum glanced over her shoulder, checking one last time, then dashed into the shadows between the trees. The forest was still darl, the first faint rays of sunshine beginning to peek through the treetops. The murmur of the stream was barely audible, but the singing birds perched in the trees were clearly heard. It was a bit chilly on this spring morning, especially in the shade of the trees. A gentle breeze was gently stirring the leaves and playing through Aurum's gold fur. A shiver coursed through the young pup's body, and tickled her spine. She flicked her tail in an attempt to get rid of the strange sensation. Then Aurum turned her muzzle towards the gentle wind and scented the air. The pup could smell the fresh, green smell of the grass and trees, the scent of the birds, one she had smelled only a few times before. Her nose also picked up the earthen scent of the dirt, and what she guessed to be a mouse. Aurum could also smell a very strange scent. What is that? she pondered, cocking her head. "I guess I'll find out!" she decided eagerly, trotting off in the direction of the odd smell, her nose to the ground, her tail wagging. Every once in a while she would look up and snort to clear her nose of all the mixed scents, and her light-green optics would scan the area for the mysterious creature she was tracking. Aurum noticed that the scent trail weaved back and forth, did numerous loops, and kept getting stronger. The yellow-pelted femme looked up, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, and they were drawn to the animal the pup had been tracking. It possessed a red coat, white muzzle and chest, and its bushy tail was tipped with black. It almost looked like a wolf, but it was smaller, its muzzle was pointed and its tail was definitely bushier. "What is that thing?" Aurum said out loud without even thinking. The creature snapped his head around to face her, its eyes locked on the curious pup, and growled, baring its teeth. Aurum stood stock-still, her eyes on the red-furred mini-wolf in front of her. Then it began slowly advancing towards her. Just then Aurum realized This thing wants to kill me. Fear shot through her, and screamed at her to run. Aurum whipped around raced back to the camp. However, the pup was not used to running in the forest, darting in and out, and dodging trees, and tripped everywhere, the creature steadily gaining on her. Soon Aurum was able to feel the beast's hot breath on her hind legs. Pure terror pulsed through her body, pushing her to go faster, but her lungs burned and her muscles ached. Just keep running. she told herself. It's not over yet. But with each thundering pawstep she took, her pace slowed more and more. Then, suddenly, the pup lost her footing and tumbled to the ground, coming so close to hitting a tree that it brushed lightly against her fur. But as she went down, she saw a blurry brown shape fly over her head. Her ears picked up the sound of a few yelps and growls, and by the time she got to her paws and turned around, the creature was dead. Standing over it was Cole, the pack's second-in-command. Cole was a massive brown-furred brute, with large shoulders. The fur on his back darkened into an almost black color and traveled all the way to the tip of his tail. His eyes matched his pelt, only a few shades lighter. No one else was with him; Aurum guessed he had followed her scent trail. Cole began to pad towards her, a serious look on his face. The pup lowered her gaze and pressed her ears back. "You" Cole began. "Are in so much trouble."
